Leader Grade!
About a month ago I worked on a project for a company in Omaha, NE. They create several different tools for small businesses to help improve the company as well as the employees that work there. This project was really fun to work on because they had some guidelines I needed to follow but for the most part I just got to do whatever I wanted style wise. I had done a video a few years ago for capella university and i wanted to try and do a cooler more updated version of that video in a way.
I think it came out pretty well for the most part. There are always things you would do differently when looking back on a completed project but it was a great way to practice and focus on 2d animation in after effects.
Geocrafty part duex!
A couple weeks ago I was asked to create a 15 second spot for a scanner and printer company in WI. I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to implement the look I had been messing around with a few weeks earlier. I had to do a character based pieces so it is not quite what I had envisioned for the AARP boards but the overall effect is similar. An after thought to this project was that it might have been cool to give it a stop motion feel rather than fluid motion. Maybe I will mess with that idea in the future!
I used cinema 4d for the 3d, flash for the hand drawn effects, and AE for compositing. One issue I had with the 3D was flickering problems in the final renders. I tried 10 or 12 different things to fix it and then finally I used IR+QMC full animation in the GI settings to fix the issue. The render took a little bit longer but the end result looked a lot better.
Geocrafty
A few weeks ago I designed some style frames for AARP along with a few co-workers. I really liked the direction I came up with and thought I would post them on here for future reference. Unfortunately the client decided to go with a different direction so I plan on using this style for a personal project in the near future.
The look is a mixture of flash (for the hand drawn look) and c4d (for the polygonal models). I actually started with a base texture I got from c4d cafe which kind of sparked the idea. My plan for motion was to have each of the shapes (sun, cloud, lightning, etc.) build on in an origami like fashion. The paper would begin out of nowhere and fold together to create the full object. Hopefully a test is soon to come!
Oh and please excuse the stock photos haha.

I have been trying to learn Mograph better in C4d recently and put together a fun little abstract test the other day. I realize polygonal abstract stuff is very popular and has been done to death but it was the perfect way to learn more about Mograph. I work better with a theme so I went with an overall idea of cellular reproduction. Since it is such a short piece the video is set to loop so you can watch it a few times. I think it turned out pretty cool!
We actually ended up using a super condensed version of it for the title of the Protokulture reel. Check that out as well!
London Marathon
I plan on updating my reel and portfolio work sometime in the near future but in the mean time I plan on posting some of my more recent motion pieces on here.
I was asked to just make an SD 10-15 second introduction for the London Marathon. Something eye catching and flashy, spotlighting the logo, that would then bring you into the live footage from the event. I had a lot of fun with this one. There is something so enjoyable about putting together a 10-15 second clip. It’s challenging to make a piece that short but at the same time fun to get an idea across in that amount of time. This piece was completely done in after effects except for the gridded world which was a cel render from c4d.
Work in progress
So I have been working on a “for fun,” music video that has been in progress for about half a year. Not necessarily because I have put a half of year of work into but because I have been trying to do it in my free time which is next to none. I still plan on completing it in the next few months but I thought I would post a couple of stills from it so far to keep me motivated on finishing it.
I also have decided to try and use this blog more, hopefully posting a couple things every other week just to log my growth as I press forward in the motion community in Chicago.
Fruit Club
I had to model and texture some fruit for an upcoming project at work. I thought I’d share a pretty decent looking lemon I came up with. It’s nothing crazy but it was my first experience using sub surface scattering so I thought it was worthy of a post. I also thought it needed to be paired in a scene with the cherry I modeled a while ago. I ALSO thought they both needed big smiles and teeth as well. Ended up looking kind of familiar………..
mmmm color correction
So I’ve been working on a bumper for G4′s “Attack of the Show,” this past week and just thought I would post some stills show my color correction and compositing process. It was quite a challenge to get the footage to look the way I wanted especially since it was shot so dark. I ended up having to do a lot of rotoscoping but it was definitely worth it to get that warm grandma’s house nostalgic feel. Should be able to post the actual video up on my site soon.

Crown Amp
Did some 3d stills for Crown Amplifiers a little bit ago and thought they turned out pretty well. It was my first experience with Vray in Cinema 4d. I still don’t have a grasp on it at all but it was cool to begin fiddling with it. Here are a few of the stills.

Rubik’s Cube idea
I little bit ago I worked on an animation idea for Office Depot’s Rubik’s cube logo. They wanted to improve on the idea that the Rubik’s cube was meant to emphasis “smarter,” office supplies. The direction I took their logo was to create a simple Rubik’s cube animation that was built of a bunch of LED’s that would basically tell you how to solve the Rubik’s cube. Check out my style frame for it!
