Long time no post! I think everyone who has a blog at one time or another has said the words “I need to be better about posting,” SO I WON’T SAY THAT! But I do need to be better…

I recently was asked to design some characters for an client pitch and I really liked what I ended up creating. Sadly they switched their direction last minute so I was unable to use the characters for the pitch.

I am used to this type of rejection though. Not the rejection of a client not using me for their project, but rather the rejection of an idea I have put a lot of time and effort into. I have a folder on my hard drive that is titled “un-used concepts,” which contains a lot of boards, style frames, characters, etc. that I was really pumped to move forward on but they did not meet up with the clients needs. The client is always number one, that’s just how it goes, and a majority of the time I come out with a great piece that the client and myself are super happy with! Plus I have blog material now!!! About a month ago I worked on a project for a company in Omaha, NE. They create several different tools for small businesses to help improve the company as well as the employees that work there. This project was really fun to work on because they had some guidelines I needed to follow but for the most part I just got to do whatever I wanted style wise. I had done a video a few years ago for capella university and i wanted to try and do a cooler more updated version of that video in a way.

I think it came out pretty well for the most part. There are always things you would do differently when looking back on a completed project but it was a great way to practice and focus on 2d animation in after effects.

A couple weeks ago I was asked to create a 15 second spot for a scanner and printer company in WI. I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to implement the look I had been messing around with a few weeks earlier. I had to do a character based pieces so it is not quite what I had envisioned for the AARP boards but the overall effect is similar. An after thought to this project was that it might have been cool to give it a stop motion feel rather than fluid motion. Maybe I will mess with that idea in the future!

I used cinema 4d for the 3d, flash for the hand drawn effects, and AE for compositing. One issue I had with the 3D was flickering problems in the final renders. I tried 10 or 12 different things to fix it and then finally I used IR+QMC full animation in the GI settings to fix the issue. The render took a little bit longer but the end result looked a lot better.

A few weeks ago I designed some style frames for AARP along with a few co-workers. I really liked the direction I came up with and thought I would post them on here for future reference. Unfortunately the client decided to go with a different direction so I plan on using this style for a personal project in the near future.

The look is a mixture of flash (for the hand drawn look) and c4d (for the polygonal models). I actually started with a base texture I got from c4d cafe which kind of sparked the idea. My plan for motion was to have each of the shapes (sun, cloud, lightning, etc.) build on in an origami like fashion. The paper would begin out of nowhere and fold together to create the full object. Hopefully a test is soon to come!
